Srinagar|June, 5 : On the occasion of ” World Environment Day” observed every year on 5th June, the “Group of Concerned Citizens”  (GCC) Jammu and Kashmir has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating environment situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement  released here today, the GCC took serious note of  the gradual depletion of dense forest cover, continued conversion of forest land for non – forest purposes even with government permission, degradation of soil and land  resources, depletion and degradation of water bodies like rivers, lakes and wetlands, rapid conversion of agriculture land for non- agriculture purposes, indiscriminate and unauthorised construction on agriculture lands, inadequate solid waste management, widespread use of plastic and non- biodegradable materials.
The GCC has made a fervent appeal  to the general public in Jammu and Kashmir to excercise maximum restraint in the use of land and water resources and desist from making encroachments on water bodies like rivers, lakes and wetlands.  ” The GCC strongly believes that if appropriate and urgent steps are not taken immediately and if the general public continues to show insensitivity towards the  deteriorating environment situation , there is likelihood of severe impact on climate, ecology and biodiversity of Jammu and Kashmir which in turn will adversely impact the agriculture, horticulture and tourism based economy of J&K.”, the statement adds.
The GCC has urged the Administration—theDeputy Commissioners, Divisional Commissioners, heads of District Dev Boards,  various Tourism  ” Development Authorities”,  municipal bodies and other concerned officers in particular ,  to exercise their administrative powers under the relevant laws and rules for the protection of land and water resources and help create public awareness and involvement in the cause of  ecology and environment. The GCC cautioned that any extra burden on the already  fragile ecology  due to increased population pressure or uncontrolled round the year tourist inflow are bound to result in more adverse consequences . The GCC has also sought personal intervention of the Hon’ble LG of Jammu and Kashmir and his administration to take cognizance of the overall environmental situation and initiate measures to arrest the continued drift.
