Udhampur : To pay tributes to renowned Indian classical music legend Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Department of Music, Government College for Women UdhampurFriday organized a webinar on the topic “Life and contribution of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma” under Shikisht Bharat.
Principal of the College, Prof.Minu Mahajan was the chief guest, while Dr. Bharat Bhushan Head of Department Music GLDM College Hiranagar, Kathua was the resource person of the event.
Prof.Minu Mahajan said that Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was a famous classical musician, who attained international fame by taking the musical instrument Santoor to another level. The Santoor is essentially a folk instrument that originated in the Kashmir Valley, and it achieved the status of a classical instrument due to the genius of PanditShivkumar Sharma, she added.
Dr. Bharat Bhushan gave a detailed lecture on the subject and elaborated about the life of legendary musician, his riyaz, level of practice, level of performances and contribution in the field of music.
Dr.Bhushan said that Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma collaborated with many musicians, including ZakirHussain and HariprasadChaurasiyaand formed a music team (Shiv-Hari) with the noted flutist HariprasadChaurasia and composed music for Hindi films Darr, Silsila, Lamhe, etc.
He further said that for his remarkable achievements in the field of music, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was honored with many prestigious awards, including the Padmashree, the Padma Vibhushan, the SangeetNatak Academy Award, an honorary doctorate from the University of Jammu, the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award, the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, etc.
In the end, Head of Department of Music, Dr.Seema Sharma presented a vote of thanks and gave a brief resume of the activities being carried out by the Music Department from time to time.
