Srinagar : As part of ongoing ‘Save Hokersar-Save Srinagar’ campaign being held under the banner ‘TAWAZUN’ from 7th to 21st May 2022 and launched by the Department of Wildlife Protection J&K Government, Wetlands Division Kashmir, the Director, Physical Education, Women’s College (WC) Zakura Tuesday flagged-off a cleanliness drive in and around Hokersar Wetland Conservation Reserve (WCR), here to maintain the ecological characteristics of the world-famous wetland (RAMSAR Site).
Safai-karamcharis of Municipal Committees of Srinagar, Budgam and Narbal, Range Officer, Lakes along with his field staff, Students of Women’s CollegeZakura/ Boys Higher Secondary School-Mujigund/ Boys Higher Secondary School-Maloora, different N.G.O’s, volunteers, Panchayat members, Forest Protection Force personals of K-01/K-03 and representatives of different stake holding departments participated.
During the drive solid waste of about 5 to 6 trucks of load were collected from Daharmuna Playground/ Gund-Hassi Bhat/Zainakoot Bund/SozeithChinar Colony and was accordingly disposed-off, which involved mass efforts of 250 persons.
Speaking on the occasion, RikzaImtiyaz (Lecturer, Disaster Management, and Govt. Women’s College-Zakura), thanked the participants and highlighted the role of Wetlands in safeguarding the people from disasters as they storea largesupply of freshwater, protect us from tsunamis and tidal surges, reduce land erosion and provide countless other benefits.
It is worth mentioning here that this initiative is a joint collaboration of the department of Wildlife Protection J&K Government, Wetlands Division Kashmir with stakeholding departments, civil society groups, N.G.O’s and Educational institutions.
