Jammu : Ayushman Bharat SEHAT Scheme yet again scripted the history by financing the three kidney transplants in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
Medical Superintendent Jammu Super Specialty Hospital Dr Harjeet said that the government was reaching out to the citizens of J&K to mitigate their out-of-pocket health expenses through the Ayushman Bharat SEHAT scheme.
“The Kidney transplant of three patients was done free of cost as the same was funded by Ayushman Bharat SEHAT scheme under Health Benefit Package 2.2. Even the follow-up treatment would be free of cost. The Ayushman Bharat SEHAT is helping people particularly poor to meet their medical expenses,” he said.
The surgeries were conducted on April 30 and May 1, 2022.
In the first case, the kidney of a mother was successfully transplanted to her 27-year-old son, in the second case the kidney of another mother was transplanted to her 36-year-old daughter, while in the third case, the kidney of the wife was transplanted to her 60-year-old husband. The beneficiaries hail from Kishtwar, Doda and Jammu districts, respectively. All recipients were cases of Chronic Kidney Disease on dialysis. After the family members came forward to donate their kidneys, the transplantation was carried out after completing all the legal formalities.
Notably, SKIMS was the first in J&K to conduct this procedure under the Ayushman Bharat financial scheme. The patient from Poonch was provided with all expenses under the scheme.
Ayushman Bharat Cell quickly processed and disposed of cases for the benefit of poor patients.
Initially kidney transplant expenditure was not covered under the said scheme. But now the financial cover has also been extended to patients who need Kidney transplant.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while announcing the development on his official Twitter handle, congratulated the team of doctors and nursing staff for the feat.
“GMC, Jammu has become the first medical college in J&K to successfully perform Kidney transplant. Many congratulations to the team of doctors & nursing staff for this path-breaking achievement,” the LG wrote on Twitter.
