Pulwama : While continuing the drive to destroy illicit cultivation of poppy in South Kashmir parts, the officials of excise and taxation department along with revenue team visited Saimoh area of Tral sub district on Friday to lauch drive against the poppy cultivation there.
The drive was launched under the supervision of excise and taxation officer, South Kashmir, Sameer Ahmad, in presence of Tehsildar Tral, Sajad Ahmad and other officials.
On the occasion, the officials appealed people to keep themselves away from the cultivation of poppy, while they also appealed those, to destroy the crop, who have already cultivated it.
While talking to Kashmir Horizon, the excise and taxation officer, South Kashmir Range, Sameer Ahmad said that they started the drive to destroy poppy cultivation, early this year.
He said that “the cultivation is being destroyed prematurely, so that this illicit crop doesn’t reach maturity, as people may misuse it, if it reaches to maturity.”
The officer further said that they continued to destroy the crop in Awantipora, Tral, Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam areas, for a last few weeks, “while drive will remain continue in the days to come.”
As per Sameer, many awareness programmes were earlier conducted at tehsil levels, in which people were asked to keep themselves away from cultivating this illicit crop. He said that people may face legal action under NDPS act, if they continue to grow it.
