When any member of the family of the Prophet (Pbuh ) fell ill, it was ordered that a ‘Talbeena’ be prepared for him. Then he used to say that ‘Talbeena’ removes grief from the heart of a sick person and removes his weakness as if one of you washes his face with water and removes dirt from the cross”(Ibn Majah). The Prophet (Pbuh ) said to Jibraeel : Jibraeel , I am tired. Jibraeel replied: O Messenger of Allah! Use ‘Talbeena’, Today’s modern scientific research has proved that ‘Talbeena’ (barley) contains 10 times more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach, it also contains all the necessary vitamins ‘Talbeena’ is also recommended for anxiety and fatigue. The Prophet (Pbuh) used to say that it is a treatment for all the ailments of the patient’s heart and removes grief from the heart. ( Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nisai, Musnand Ahmad). When someone complained to the Prophet (Pbuh) about lack of appetite, you would order him to eat ‘Talbeena’ and say: By the grace of Allah in whose hand is my soul, Talbeena’ removes the filth from your stomaches as one of you washes his face with water. The Holy Prophet (Pbuh) did not like anything better than a ” Talbeena” for the patient. This included the benefits of barley as well as the benefits of honey. But they preferred to eat semi-warm food, frequent meals and on an empty stomach even a full stomach. Barley was first used in winemaking in Babylonia in 2800 BC. Traditional Roman athletes consumed barley for strength and energy. South America introduced this cereal in the 16th century by the Spanish, and it reached the United States in the 17th century. Over 65% of barley was then used as animal feed 30% in the making of alcoholic beverages and just 1.5% as food for human consumption.
