Hike in wages of daily wagers, casual labours and temporary employees working in different departments is a big respite to them before a full fledged revision of their wages by the Labour & Employment Department expected anytime in coming few months. Since the rising inflation had necessitated hike in the wages of the said daily rated workers of different departments, the announcement of the Government decision by none else than the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha himself ahead of the forthcoming Eid-Ul-Fitr has brought long awaited respite to the daily rated workers of all the government departments across Jammu & Kashmir. Notably Central Government had recently announced hike in dearness allowance (DA) of both it’s employees and as well as pensioners and as such hike in the wages of the said daily rated workers had become overdue also now. The announcement of the hike in the wages of daily rated workers has now generated hopes of an early decision on the full fledged revision of the wages of the said daily rated workers for whom the pressing issue is their regularisation. Revision of wages by the labour and employment department to the said daily rated workers if fast paced would be recognition of their work in their respective departments.

In fact almost all the employee unions of the government departments have been struggling for the regularisation of the said daily rated workers of different departments for a very long time now and are hoping for an early decision on regularisation issue sooner than later. Though the regularisation plan for the daily workers demands a huge financial involvement but one time settlement of the regularisation demand of the said daily rated workers could be a big boost to the rising unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir which is said to have reached 24% in recent years.

It is in place to mention here that daily workers are playing a central role in working of different departments like power development department (PDD) as most of the daily rated workers discharging the duties of linemen in this department deserve risk allowance keeping in view the deaths of dozens of linemen in the line of duty in recent months. Similarly daily rated workers in some other departments are also risking their lives in carrying out basic social services to the doorsteps of the people.
