Hassle free power supply is as good a pressing issue in summer as it is in winter in both Kashmir valley and Jammu division. While power supply improves during peak winter months in Jammu, it improves during summer months in Kashmir valley. Be it winter or summer the consumption of power does not change with the change in season but it changes with the change in industrial and non industrial commercial activities. Unfortunately the intermittent power cuts continue to haunt consumers even in peak summer months in Kashmir the way unscheduled power cuts don’t head to no dead end in peak winter months in Jammu division. Despite claims of surplus power the successive popular governments of erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir state failed to reduce the increasing gapes between the generation and the consumption of power both in Kashmir valley and as well as in Jammu division . So reducing the gape between the generation and consumption remains the biggest challenge for power distribution in Jammu & Kashmir even this time. The public outcry on this count can be overcome only if Northern grid comes to the rescue of Jammu & Kashmir Government till the time it achieves the targets of self sufficiency in power generation. Power is a pressing issue not only for industries but also for other business operations like tourism and travel activities in both Kashmir valley and as well as Jammu division. Since execution of new power projects and completion of incomplete power projects is likely to take some more time, the central government alone can bail out the Jammu & Kashmir Government by increasing power supply from the northern grid to reduce the increasing gapes between the generation and the consumption of power in Jammu & Kashmir.
Unless and until the power consumption on both residential and commercial lines are not calculated periodically, government can’t carry out corrective measures for distributing the power supply adequately to both residential and commercial consumers in both Kashmir valley and Jammu division.
Besides general consumers the hotels, houseboats and the general industries are worst hit by the impending power cuts. So the segregation of the residential and commercial lines once executed on ground could give a real assessment of the dismal power scenario in both Kashmir valley and Jammu division. After the segregation of the residential and commercial lines the power situation can be reviewed periodically to look into the surge in demands for more power connections from both commercial and residential consumers in both Kashmir valley and as well as Jammu division. Unless and until the power consumption on both residential and commercial lines are not calculated periodically, government can’t carry out corrective measures for distributing the power supply adequately to both residential and commercial consumers in both Kashmir valley and Jammu division.
