Udhampur : Anti-Ragging Cell of Government College for Women, Udhampur organized an awareness lecture on “Ragging” for the newly elected members of Students Council here the other day.
The chief guest and resource person on the occasion was Prof. Sumita Rao, Dean Students Welfare of GCW Udhampur.
The program started with the welcome address presented by Prof. Tania Akhtar, Convener Anti-Ragging Cell. In her address, she highlighted the aims and objectives of the Anti-ragging cell of the college and also shared a helpline email with the students’ Council.
The Resource person of the event, Prof. Sumita Rao started her talk with the various types of ragging. In her lecture, she said, “Ragging is an old practice of welcoming the fresher in a barbaric manner. It started in Greece where new students of the sports community were subjected to all kinds of humiliations and teasing to inculcate a team spirit in them”. She further added that ragging sometimes affects parents also. She also stressed on how self-diagnosis can help one to come out from the trauma of ragging if one happens to encounter it. She also exemplified the students about the indirect death caused due to ragging. She concluded her lecture by saying that ragging involves abuse, humiliations or harassment of new entrants or junior students by the seniors but sometimes by junior students to seniors also.
Prof. Mushtaq, Prof. Shallu, Prof. Roopa, Dr. Shaveta, and Prof. Tania Mahajan were the members of the Anti-ragging cell involved in the smooth conduct of the program. The program ended with the formal vote of thanks presented by Prof. Roopa Kumari (Member, Anti ragging Cell).
