Traffic diversions may be good for the traffic regulations more in city centre than in any other area of Srinagar but when traffic diversions enforced exclusively on passenger vehicles cause huge physical inconvenience to passengers the traffic regulation authorities come in for sharp criticism from people of all hues. Unfortunately only passengers but not the people travelling vehicles become ultimate casualty of the traffic diversions enforced due to lack of parking slots for passenger vehicles in the city centre areas and many other parts of the summer capital. While mechanised car parking slots established during last two years are fully operational at many places in city centre areas, there are no parking slots for passenger vehicles (Sumos and Mini Buses) in the city centre areas as a result of which passenger vehicles (both Sumos and Mini Buses) are being asked to park their vehicles at places physically most inconvenient to passengers. Unfortunately a parking slot of passenger vehicles near Jahangir chowk was shut down for allowing the construction of shopping complexes there during the reign of popular governments in recent years but no other place was identified in the vicinity of Jahangir Chowk for parking of passenger vehicles (both Sumos and Passenger buses) thereafter. Due to traffic diversions the passengers are forced to travel longer distances for boarding passenger vehicles (both Sumos and Passenger buses) at the most inconvenient places declared parking slot for passenger vehicles which causes huge physical inconvenience to them (passengers) without any rhyme or reason. In the end casualties of provocative and irritating traffic diversions are the passengers of South Srinagar areas of the city and may be that such disturbing traffic diversions are also enforced also in some other parts of Srinagar city and many major towns of Kashmir valley.
Traffic regulation is a duty which the traffic police department has to carry out without causing any physical or financial inconvenience to either the passengers or the passenger transport operators. Administrative wisdom demands that traffic diversions under the garb of traffic regulations don’t become the cause of physical or financial inconvenience to either the passengers or the passenger transport operators within or outside the Srinagar city.
So in one way or other while the passengers are being overtly and covertly denied right to avail traveling facilities at the convenient places in city centre areas, the drivers of the passenger vehicles (Sumos and mini buses) are also being denied the right to run their business from the suitable places in many parts of uptown Srinagar.
