Week Long NSS Camp culminates at GDC Mahanpur

Kathua: NSS Unit of Government Degree College Mahanpur, in collaboration with different departments of the College and IQAC cell organized a Week long NSS camp, which culminated Wednesday.
The Camp was conducted under the aegis of AzadikaAmrutMohatsav, Higher Education Department and NSS Programme coordinator of Jammu University, Dr.Anju Sharma Thappa. The aim of the Camp was to train young students in delivering community service.
NSS Programme Officer Dr.Sapna Devi coordinated the camp under the overall supervision and guidance of Principal of the College Dr.Rakesh Kumar Koul.
On the inaugural day of the seven days camp, the students were briefed about the various activities to be conducted during the Camp.
The Chief Guest of the Programme was ShukalSanwal (Sarpanch, Rehalta), while Sanjay Kumar (Panch, Rehalta), Watan Das (Panch, Rehalta) and Ratan Chand (Panch, Rehalta) were special invitees.
The College Principal, in his keynote address, emphasized on the need to create awareness among masses about the importance of community service and to make India clean, green , pollution free and a better place to live.
On the second day of the event, the Department of Sanskrit, in collaboration with NSS Unit of GDC Mahanpur, organized a Poster making Competition under the supervision of Dr.ParshottamDass from Department of Sanskrit and Dr.Sapna Devi, NSS Programme Officer. Besides NSS volunteers of the College visited Rehalta village. The participants of the Poster making Competition showcased their posters in front of the villagers and also described in detail the importance of ‘Clean India and Green India’.
On the third day, the Department of Environmental Sciences (EVS) in collaboration with the NSS Unit organised a Plantation Drive. NSS volunteers visited Rehalta village and planted several varieties of native trees including PhyllanthusEmblica (Amla), Syzygium Cumin (Jamun), Callistemon (Waterbrush Flower), PongamiaPinatea (Sukhchain), DalvergiaSissoo (Talli), etc. The saplings were provided by Deepak Bogia, Range Officer (Forest Department, Mahanpur).
On the fourth day, NSS volunteers undertook a Cleanliness drive in the College Campus and in the Rehalta village.
On the fifth day, the Department of Political Science and Department of Environmental Sciences (EVS) in collaboration with NSS Unit organized ‘Best out of the Waste’ Activity. Fifty NSS volunteers participated in the ‘Best out of the Waste’ Activity held on the College Campus. They used waste material like plastic bottles, bangles, newspaper cuttings, used wool, waste paper, pebbles, cardboard, wires, dry flowers, paint, etc and created useful and beautiful products.
The sixth day of the event was marked by conducting a cleanliness drive at village Rehalta by the Department of Library Sciences and the Department of Hindi with special focus on ‘Rejuvenation of Water body’. NSS volunteers cleaned the Rehalta water body (bowli) and also its surrounding area.
On the final day of the camp, the Department of English, in collaboration with the NSS unit, organized a Cultural and valedictory function of ‘one week long’ NSS camp.
The programme started with the ceremony of lightening of the traditional lamp by the dignitaries.
Principal of the College, Dr.Rakesh Kumar Koul, in his address, congratulated the NSS volunteers for their active participation in the camp. He shared his personal experiences with the audience and gave a vision for the betterment of the nation.
The chief guest of the event was BDO, MahanpurDr.NavdeepSabharwal. The valedictory programme included Report Presentation of one week long camp, Punjabi dance, poetry recitation, solo song, Dogri dance and Punjabi Giddha. Certificates were distributed among all the NSS volunteers by the dignitaries. The entire event was hosted by Prof.RupaleeJasrotia.
