Forget about the harassment and exploitation of women at workplaces in Jammu & Kashmir like many states and union territories of the country the recent acid attack on a woman and killing of a teenage girl in a grenade attack in Srinagar just a day before the International women’s day has changed the celebrations on International Women day into a mourning and as such incidents only show how safe women are in Kashmir. By all standards of understandabilities the causes of disturbing incidents bringing into question the safety of women both in home and at also public places besides work places if not looking into for the purposes of the safety of women both within and outside the home, the consequences could be more disturbing for future generations than the present scenario of women safety in Kashmir. People have not to only expect women safety measures from the government but the religious preechers and civil society groups are also equally duty bound to work for reducing the increasing intensity of the attacks on women for the purposes of women safety not only in Kashmir but also in Jammu division. Amid increasing attacks on women the performance of women in all spheres of public activity generates hopes of unprecedented rise in the empowerment of women in Jammu & Kashmir. The recent results of J&K Board of School Education (J&K BOSE) have shown that girls are overtaking boys in education too. As such it is obviously clear that women also stand at the centre of social transformation process in Jammu & Kashmir. What matters the most in the times of increasing emphasis on gender equality and women empowerment is the increasing role of women in the key institutions of policy making and public administration in Jammu & Kashmir.
Whatever the religious preechers and civil society groups may or may not do for the security and safety of the women in Jammu & Kashmir but irrefutable fact is that both the concerns about the safety of women both in home and as well at work places and the expectations about the increasing participation of women in social transformation process generate a sense of confidence about bright future of women in Jammu & Kashmir.
In this fastly changing socio-economic scenario social awareness about the safety and liberty of women is the only way to further the causes of the security and safety women both at home and as well as at work places. Never forget that religious preachers and civil society groups have central role in generating social awareness about the security and safety of women which they are not playing as actively as they should have places.
