Kashmiri surgeon get patent for retractor

Srinagar :Eight years of struggle has finally borne fruit as noted Kashmiri laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgeon Mushtaq Chalkoo has been awarded the patent for “Chalkoo Retractor” for minilap cholecystectomy.
Chalkoo, a professor at the Government Medical College here, had applied for the patent of the instrument in 2013. A notification was issued earlier this week.
The certificate said the patent would be for 20 years starting from May 20, 2013. “It is a continuous struggle of eight years. The fruits (my) progeny will harvest,” the surgeon said
He said the “Chalkoo Retractor” will facilitate the operating surgeon through a very small incision.
“The instrument will enter through a 2 cm incision and then will retract a bigger area of more than 4 cm, thereby allowing the surgeon to work in a small space comfortably,” he said.
Chalkoo is known for his techniques in laparoscopy and minimal access surgery. He is also recognized for his YouTube channel and professional videos on advanced laparoscopic procedures. He has 64 scientific publications and has delivered more than 110 talks nationally and internationally.
