Rajouri : Fisheries Department has planned to introduce Japanese fish for increasing fish production in Rajouri District.
The information was given in a meeting chaired by District Development Commissioner, VikasKundal convened to review the functioning of the Fisheries Department, here Saturday.
Chief Planning Officer, Mohammad Khurshid; AD Fisheries, Munish Sharma and other concerned officers attended the meeting.
The AD Fisheries informed that there are two fish breeding farms in the district including a trout farm at Phalni in Budhal and one carp farm at Muradpur. In capture fisheries, there are 792 registered fishermen in the district who are dependent on fish catching only. Major fish in the areas include snow trout, hill stream fish and Mahashir, the AD said.
While reviewing the implementation of PradhanMantriMatsyaSampadaYojana (PMMSY) in the district, the AD Fisheries informed the meeting that the scheme aims to enhance production through expansion, intensification, diversification and productive utilization of land and water.
For the introduction of the Japanese fish in the district, the DDC asked the concerned to culture the said species in ten fish farms on a trial basis to check the possibility of its survival.
He said that with the abundant availability of water resources the district has a huge potential in the fisheries sector and asked the concerned officer to promote it as a lucrative self-employment option.
