Srinagar: Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away at his home in Hyderpora area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening, family sources said here.Meanwhile IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar has said that restrictions and internet suspension will be imposed in Jammu & Kashmir.
Family sources of the senior Hurriyat leader confirmed to local news gathering agencies that he passed away at his residence at around 10.00 P.M.
Geelani was born on 29 September 1929. He was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but later on founded Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He was born in a village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district and educated at Sopore.
He has also served as the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was an MLA from the Sopore constituency in 1972, 1977 and in 1987. In June 2020, Geelani quit the Hurriyat. Meanwhile IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar has said that restrictions including suspension of internet services will be imposed in the Valley.
