Srinagar: Militants Monday shot dead a BJP sarpanch and his wife in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
The militants fired on Ghulam Rasool Dar, also the Kulgam district president of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha, and his wife in Anantnag town in south Kashmir, a police official said. He said the two were rushed to a hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. Dar, a resident of Kulgam’s Redwani, was a sarpanch affiliated with the BJP. He had unsuccessfully contested the last year’s District Development Council elections. Dar was currently living in a rented accommodation in Anantnag.
Meanwhile police has in a statement issued on Monday said that two bike borne militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit were involved in killing of a BJP sarpanch and his wife in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
A spokesperson said that at about 1600hrs on Monday Anantnag Police received information about an incident at Lalchowk area of Anantnag where militants had fired upon BJP Sarpanch and his wife, a Panch.The statement reads that the IGP Kashmir, DIG South Kashmir and SSP Anantnag reached to the spot. “Preliminary investigation revealed that militants barged inside the rented accommodation of BJP Sarpanch Ghulam Rasool Dar son of Ghulam Hassan Dar resident of Redwani Kulgam at Lalchowk, Anantnag and fired indiscriminately from pistol. In this incident he and his wife Jawhara Begum received critical gunshot injuries, who were immediately shifted to hospital, where both were declared brought dead,” it reads.It reads that although the deceased was provided a secured accommodation at Snow cap hotel kulgam and both stayed there for a short period but they had been continuously insisting to stay at their house at Anantnag Town and also submitted an undertaking in this regard.
“On their request they were allowed to stay in Anantnag. He was also provided with one PSO who, however, was found absent from duty at the time of incident. The said PSO has been placed under suspension,” it reads.
It reads that the police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. As per the statement the IGP Kashmir said that two bike born militants of LeT outfit were involved in this barbaric incident“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the incident. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on,” it reads.
