Ramban: As part of the ongoing Van Mahotsav celebration, a plantation cum awareness drive was Tuesday organized by the Social Forestry Division, Ramban here at Dharamkund.
The plantation drive was launched by District Development Council Chairperson, Ramban, Dr Shamshad Shan in presence of Sarpanch and Chairman VPPC Kanga, Shakeela Begum by planting some saplings.
Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Mahesh Thakur, PRI members, officials of Social Forestry Division, officials of Government Middle School Dharamkund and locals also participated in the drive.
During the plantation drive, saplings of different species were planted with the aim to increase the greenery and maintain ecological balance and scenic beauty of the area.
The Van Mahotsav celebrations are being organized by the Department of Social Forestry across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir under overall supervision of PCCF/Director Department of Social Forestry J & K, Roshan Jaggi.
While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shan highlighted the role of plantation in maintaining ecological balance and combating pollution. She said it will also help in soil and water conservation thus minimizing the incidents of landslides and other related environmental hazards.
She appealed to local people, members of PRIs, students, NGOs and other stakeholders to come forward and voluntarily participate in plantation drives.
