Jammu Mayor Chander Mohan Gupta was recently in news for saying that his plans of massive plantation would change weather in Jammu and the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir will have snow in Jammu in 2031 which would make it a famed tourist destination then. By all standards of human understandabilities people can wait for seeing Jammu Mayor’s dreams about snow in Jammu coming true after a decade from now onwards in 2031 but they can’t wait so long for waste management plan from the Jammu Municipal Corporation to see the winter capital cleared of the filth spotted all around the winter capital this time. Holding a broom on the roadside is good enough for the JMC management to show respect to Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission but unless and until the garbage is not lifted from public places and disposed of properly the Jammu city can’t become a livable place for it’s inhabitants and visitors from other parts of the country. While the irrefutable fact is that JMC has been dumping garbage collected from the city parts at Bhagwati Nagar near the banks of river Tawi for last many years, which is not only causing air polluting but also polluting the river water, the JMC management under the leadership of it’s Mayor dreaming snow in the year 2031after a decade from now onwards does not bother to think about a plan for a proper waste disposal management plan for the Jammu city. For lifting four hundred tones of garbage generated by 12 lakh population the Jammu Mayor has to oversee the implementation a proper solid waste management plan for which people can’t wait till the dream of snowfall comes true in 2031 but instead they would like to see the dream of a clean city coming true before the beginning of new financial year.

Unless and until the fundamental requirements are not met , Jammu city  will continue to suffer from poor waste management which poses serious threats to the future of  public health and the environment in Jammu city. So priorities and slogans have to be changed for furtherance of the objectives of a clean city but not for dreaming a snow after next tend years in 2031.

Since the irrefutable fact is that adequate waste management infrastructure is the basic requirement for executing solid waste management plan in any city, focus on an adequate waste management infrastructure has to be a priority for the Jammu Mayor and entire JMC Management. Unless and until the fundamental requirements are not met, Jammu city  will continue to suffer from poor waste management which poses serious threats to the future of  public health and the environment in Jammu city. So priorities and slogans have to be changed for furtherance of the objectives of a clean city but not for dreaming a snow after next tend years in 2031.
