The claim of restoration of political process with reference to holding of elections in Jammu & Kashmir has to be there for real. Knowing all about changes in the situation on ground taking place just like rains in a monsoon season for over last more than six months in Jammu & Kashmir Kashmir, the incumbent central government does not tend to act in hast over the restoration of statehood even after holding DDC elections for the first time in Jammu & Kashmir . The political scenario is though changing fast in Jammu & Kashmir since last two months but the scenario may or may not change in coming months the way it has changed in last two months. Keeping in view the fact that politics is nowhere as unpredictable as it is in Jammu & Kashmir the people in media and civil society don’t expect an immediate end to increasing political chaos in Jammu & Kashmir as such focus of the government has to be on the collapsing economy of the people in both Kashmir valley and as well as Jammu . Since the situation in Kashmir has a bearing on the core sectors of economy in Jammu, the central government has to take care of the economic concerns of the people given the fact that trust deficit has increased but not reduced during last two years’ of direct central rule in Jammu & Kashmir. Demands for sops to farmers and travel and tour operators though deserve immediate attention of the Government in Jammu & Kashmir but so for the concerned field agencies have not even finalised the survey on losses suffered by farmers due to weather vagaries in last twenty years in Kashmir valley.
By all standards of understandabilities financial package for farmers connected with the horticulture sector and tourist and travel operators connected with tourism sector has to be a top priority for the government as stabilisation of the local economy is to be preferred over stablisation of political process keeping in view the increasing financial mess triggered by two consecutive covid lockdowns one this year and another one last year.
Since the key decisions of the government on the administrative and constitutional status are responsible for the current politico-economic mess in Kashmir the central government directly controlling the Jammu & Kashmir as a union territory owes too many explanations for the failures of the government’s reach out to farmers connected with horticulture sector and tourist and travel operators connected with the tourism industry in Kashmir. Since the fact remains that government can’t establish peace and harmony in presence of a disconnect with the people in the absence of a system of political instability in Kashmir. The Government can’t leave the core issue of economic revival unattended till the restoration of popular rule in Jammu & Kashmir.
