National level ‘World Environment Week’ celebrations, 2021

Srinagar: The Department of Environmental Education, (IASE) Government College of Education in collaboration with NSS Unit 1 of the college organized a week long national program to commemorate ‘World Environment Week’, observed every year as an initiative of United Nations for creating awareness and sensitization of masses about the deteriorating conditions of our environment.
The program began from 5 June 2021, which is also observed every year as ‘World Environment Day’. This year the theme of the day was ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.
The objective of this program was to provide a platform for students to express their ideas and thoughts and bring together experts to put forth their valuable opinions about the environment and ecosystem restoration, both in Kashmir valley and outside.
The program consisted of 5 events namely Info graphic Contest, Quiz contest, Doodle Art Contest, Debate on the topic ‘Covid-19 and Environment’ and the last day of the program was marked by invited lectures from two eminent environmentalists of our valley namely Dr. F. A. Lone, Professor, Division of Environmental Science, SKUAST-K and Mr. Zareef Ahmed Zareef sahib, renowned poet, social activist and environmentalist.
Whole program was conducted in an online mode due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. A good number of students from 9 colleges all across India actively participated in the program.
The participants of debate were assessed by three jury members viz. Fazl Illahi, Faculty, IASE, Dr. Malik Roshan Ara, Faculty, IASE and Dr. Asiya Nazir, Faculty, Govt. Degree College Pattan. The top 3 positions were taken by Sunain Shafi of IASE, Srinagar, Bisma Bashir of AAAM Degree College, Bemina, Srinagar and S. Sakthivel of College of Agriculture, PRIST University, Tamil Nadu, respectively
For the Infographic contest, the entries were evaluated by Dr. Bazigha Badr, Faculty, Govt. Amar Singh College, Srinagar. The top 3 positions were won by Bisma Bashir, AAAM Degree College, Bemina, Aastha Rani Pandey, Guru Nanak College, Chennai and Mehak Fatima, IASE, Srinagar respectively.
The top 3 positions in the quiz contest were won by Irfan Ahmed, Govt. Degree College, Anantnag, Mehak Fatima, IASE, Srinagar and S. Sakthivel, College of Agriculture, PRIST University, Tamil Nadu, respectively.
In the Doodle Art contest, 1st position was secured by Praveen Kumar, Maya College, Sri Dev Saman Uttarakhand State University and 2nd position by Shariq Zahoor, IASE, Srinagar.
Principal of the college, Prof. Dr. Ruhi Kanth, in her address appreciated the efforts of organisers and sent a congratulatory message to the participants and encouraged to organize more such programs in future.
A brief overview of the week-long program was presented by Convenor NSS, Unit 1.
The whole program concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Syed Shabana Shabir, Assistant Professor, IASE, Srinagar, who also carried out proceedings of the valedictory session.The event was also organised as a part of commemoration of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav.
