Bandipora : Govt Degree College Bandipora conducted an online Lecture/Webinar entitled “Re connecting with Nature” in connection with world environment day celebrated across Jammu & Kashmir. During the webinar renowned Kashmiri poet, writer, social activist and environmentalist, Zareef Ahmad Zareef, delivered a ecture on the said theme. The Webinar was organized as part of World Environment Day, 2021 with a theme “Ecosystem Restoration” to focus on resetting human relationship with the nature. Faculty, scholars and students from different colleges/institutions participated in the webinar on ZOOM cloud.
In his speech, Zareef Ahmad Zareef talked on various environmental issues of the Kashmir valley and the need to resolve it for a better future. His speech was insightful and embedded with satire in Kashmiri couplets in which he lamented the destruction caused to our environs during the last couple of decades. He elaborated how the earlier people of valley in their simple life styles were very much conscious and concerned to their environment who valued their biodiversity, forests and natural resources. The speaker also highlighted the ways through which we can re-connect with the nature and revive the broken bonds between the man and nature. He stressed on the need to conserve the precious historical background of Kashmir and protect the Mother Nature by planting trees, protecting water bodies, flora and fauna and adopting the sustainable approach to support mankind.
The webinar started with the welcome address by the College Principal, Dr. Mohd Amin Malik. The Principal mentioned about climate change, global warming, melting of the glaciers, ozone depletions etc and how energy security and sustainable development are lowering the capacity of the earth to support mankind’s increasing population. He highlighted that atmosphere is becoming more and more toxic; wastes threaten surface, ground waters and agricultural lands and the problems are threatening the survival of life on earth. He emphasized on the need to raise awareness on environmental issues and the important role of Govt. institutions, organisations,
NGO’s and people. Later on, an open discussion was held between the participants and the speakers in which various questions were answered. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Prof. Mohmad Abass Bhat, Head Department of Environmental Science and NSS officer who organised the program . The technical support was provided by Dr Parvaz Ahmad, Deptt of Computer sciences. The program concluded with the vote of thanks presented by Prof Qazi Mohd. Shaheen NSS officer of the College.
