People of J&K worst hit in absence of elected govt: Cong’s Monga

Srinagar/March, 20: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Vice President and former MLC G N Monga Saturday said that the BJP government’s policy to defer Assembly polls in J&K on one or the other pretext for the last more than two years has been causing great hardships for common people in the absence of an elected government.
In a statement issued to press from here, he said since the imposition of Central Rule in J&K in June 2018, the BJP government is running its writ in J&K leaving the people at the mercy of bureaucrats.
“Before and after the abrogation of special status of J&K under Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two union territories in August 2019, the BJP government has been delaying the Assembly polls on one or the other pretext. In March 2019, the BJP government claimed the Assembly polls in J&K will be held after the completion of the parliament elections,” Monga said.
“Later in August same year the BJP government unilaterally and unconstitutionally revoked J&K’s special status and placed the region under a strict lockdown. From 2020, the Assembly polls are being deferred on the pretext of a Delimitation Commission. Delimitation process in J&K is most bizarre as redrawing of the constituencies could have been done after holding the polls just like Assam,” the Congress leader said.
He said that it was high time for the government to hold Assembly polls in J&K as denying legitimate Constitutional rights to people is not in the interest of anybody. “The need of the hour calls for restoring a popular government in J&K. People of the J&K are facing a lot of problems due to the non-existence of the elected government as their plights are going unheard,” Monga added.
