Srinagar: Bandipora-Srinagar road near Nadihal has turned into garbage dumping site. Locals from Nadihal and adjacent areas said that people frequently use to throw garbage on road side which creates problems for locals and pedestrians. Medical experts are concerned about health threat that looms in
the area due to unattended piles of garbage and cow dung which has raised the population of stray dogs and making it difficult for people to pass through the road. In the absence of bins, residents dump the waste on roads as dogs and cattle squatter upon the waste and also consume it.
Commuters and local resi- dents while showing anger against the concerned authorities said that either garbage should be cleared regularly or dustbins should be placed. People from different areas are putting heaps of waste on the roadside, which has turned it into garbage dump site which poses threat of diseases to community,” said Tanveer Ahmad, a local resident. Residents said “the authorities should ensure the clearance of the garbage from the area and
should place bins. The area should be sanitized immediately as heaps of
garbage present there pose threat of diseases,” said Aamir, who has his agricul-
tural land nearby.
The officials however said that many dustbins are placed in the area, but locals fail to utilise them. “Residents dump the garbage at any place convenient to them that cannot be cleared immediately. Dustbins are placed in the area
and people should use them”. Refuting the claims of authorities local residents said that placing bins at different sites is not enough. It needs regular supervision of authorities and implementation on ground.
