Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president and Member of Parliament (MP) Farooq Abdullah and his wife received first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in the summer capital, Srinagar.

NC Vice President and former chief minister Omar Abdullah said that today his 85-year-old father and mother received their first COVID-19 dozes, adding ‘if he can get the vaccine, you should as well’.

“Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at SKIMS, Srinagar. Today my 85 year old father & my mother had their first COVID jab. My father has a number of health issues including being on immunosuppressant for a kidney transplant. If he can get the vaccine, you should as well,” Omar wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

Asserting that elderly people need the COVID-19 vaccine before younger generation, Omar on Monday said it is not an emotional thing, but based on cold hard facts and scientific data.

He said people, especially who are more vulnerable, should be encouraged to get vaccinated for COVID-19. “My parents & people in their age group need the vaccine before I do & I need it before Gen Y & Gen Z get theirs. It’s not an emotional thing, it’s based on cold hard facts & scientific data. We should be encouraging people to get vaccinated & especially among the more vulnerable,” Omar had tweeted on Monday.

Many politicians — including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior MPs and Chief Ministers — have got themselves vaccinated during the last couple of days.
