Srinagar: Kashmir University’s Department of Bioresources on Thursday organised an online workshop on book publishing in collaboration with Elsevier Publishers USA.
The workshop titled ‘The Book Publishing Process’ was organised for faculty members, scientists and research scholars to enable them to make use of various indices, tools and platforms of Elsevier for publishing various types of books to increase the research output and further enhance the University’s rankings in the NIRF and Quebec.
Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir, who was the chief guest at the inaugural session, underscored the importance of publishing books, reviews and research articles in the journey of academic growth of research scholars and teachers.
“Publishing a book gives authors instant credibility as experts,” he said, appreciating the efforts of the Bioresources Department in organising the workshop that aims to help academics and researchers to learn about the book publishing processes alongside paving the way for many young teachers and researchers to become authors.
More than 300 participants from various higher educational institutions from within and outside J&K attended the online workshop. These include University of Kashmir, CUK, SKUAST (K), IUST, AMU, SKIMS, GMC, BGSBU, NIT Srinagar and ICSSR New Delhi.
In his welcome address, Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Coordinator, Department of Bioresources and Organising Secretary of the workshop said the department has started a series of workshops and webinars on various academic and social issues. “Today’s workshop was sixth in this direction,” he said, expressing his gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad for his continued support to such academic endeavors.
“Books are an integral part of academic and research activity and play a vital role in teaching-learning processes. Elsevier is a leading publisher and its electronic platform has enabled easy and fast circulation of scientific knowledge,” he said.
Dr Mir urged young researchers to come up with book-writing proposals for submission to publishers like Elsevier to contribute to the knowledge domain. “Our department will continue to organise such workshops for faculty and research scholars,” he said. Dr Stacy Masucci, Senior Acquisitions Editor at Elsevier (Academic Press USA)—principal speaker on the occasion—delivered a talk on “The Book Publishing Process: An Exclusive Author Workshop”. She deliberated upon the role of editors and authors in book publishing, the processes involved in submitting book writing proposals to the publisher and various phases of the publication process. The participants later had a detailed discussion with Dr Stacy during a question-answer session. Dr Reiaz-Ul-Rehman, faculty member at Department of Bioresources, delivered a vote of thanks.
