Unprecedented violence on republic day in the vicinity of the republic day venue-the red forte has not only brought the Narendra Modi controlled BJP led NDA Government at the centre into disrepute but has brought shame to entire country on a historical day. This day of celebration turning into a day of chaos due to unprecedented violence during farmers protests at all time historical republic day venue the red fort in the national capital should by all standards of understandabilities bring Modi government into an introspection mode. What went wrong with the law and order enforcers and what went wrong with the handling of farmers protests are the issues of concern for all the stakeholders- the government, the Delhi police, the protesting farmers and the opposition parties. The absolute majority commanded by the Modi government in both the houses of parliament does not give it the absolute right to impose laws of it’s own political conveniences over the unwilling population but instead the government has to show respect to the views of the majority population, the opposition parties and other stake holders over draft proposal of any law concerning economy of the country and the welfare of the people. The only issue to be left to the political judgment of the political leadership of the country is the national security and territorial integrity of the country. A consensus over the farm laws even before tabling the bills in the parliament was the responsibility of the government and as such the decision to pass the farm bills in haste and enforce the new farm laws against the consent of farmer was by all standards of understandabilities both politically and as well administratively unwise. Obviously protest was the last resort for the farmers who publicly demanded scrapping of the farm mills before moving to Delhi for sitting on a protest over their demands but even after more than two months of non stop protests in the heart of national capital the government could not reach to any agreement with the agitating farmers over the controversial farm laws.

Delhi police working directly under the command and control of the Home Minister of the country owes a lot of explanations to the people of the country for allowing trouble shooters to create chaos in the national capital on no less important a day than the republic day. Fixing the responsibility on Delhi Police authorities for breach of peace and order on republic day in the national capital through a high level inquiry and a major initiative to resolve the farm bills row are the two major issues demanding an immediate intervention and action from the central government.

Since the Supreme Court had intervened and asked the government to resolve the crisis amicably, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should have taken themselves the issue seriously and resolved the crisis before the commencement of the republic day celebration. Since the crisis was not resolved for one reason or the other, the government had to take care of law and order on priority on republic day. A decision to grant permission to the protesting farmers for carrying out a tractor rally in the vicinity of the republic day venue was both politically and as well as administratively unwise.
