Srinagar: Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU )on Tuesday urged the authorities to release the Mirwaiz from the house arrest forthwith and allow him to resume his religious and social activities – especially as the holy month of Rabiul Awal has commenced, in which many religious gatherings are led by him.
Expressing resentment over the continuous house arrest of its head and Mirwaiz-e- Kashmir Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who remains incarcerated since August 5, 2019, MMU in a statement issued here on Tuesday said that it has been more than fifteen months since he is under arbitrary house detention.
All the constituent organisations of MMU in a joint statement condemned the house detention of Mirwaiz. Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq is the top religious cleric of the Valley. He is the Mirwaiz, an institution indigenous to the State and revered by one and all living here, MMU said in the statement.
“To incarcerate him at his home and disallow him from fulfilling his religious obligations and engage in social and welfare activities as part of his pursuit as the Mirwaiz, is not only violation of his fundamental rights but also depriving the people of the benefits that they accrue from his socio religious activities,” MMU said.
MMU termed it extremely sad that the pulpit of Jama Masjid has been made to fall silent for the last 15 months and does not resonate with the spiritually uplifting waz o tableeg (sermon )delivered by Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq, like his predecessors – the Mirwaizeen -which is famous hallmark of the central Mosque.
This hurts the religious sentiments associated with the institution and his person MMU said
