Srinagar: An emergency meeting of Badminton players of Kashmir was held here on Friday at New Indoor Hall, Poloview to discuss the issues faced by them.
It was decided that an association by the name of Kashmir Badminton Player’s Association be formed for which elections were held on the spot. More than 40 players participated in the elections.
Witnesses said Asiya Murtuza was elected as the president while Javaid Iqbal was elected the vice president. Mansoor Ahmad Shayir (general secretary) , Tariq Ahmad Khan (Joint Secretary) and Uzair Kathjoo (Treasurer) were the other office bearers. Aijaz Ahmad Qureshi was nominated as spokesperson of the association.
Javaid Dar, Inayat Jehangir, Mohammad Younis, Zahid Wani, Sanjeev Arora and Nisar Anim were elected as executive members.
After the elections, Qureshi said the association has resolved to take up with concerned authorities the issues faced by badminton players. “At the outset, we would request the government to make one of the two indoor stadia in Srinagar functional so that badminton players can resume their practice. It is the only sport which has not seen any action since outbreak of COVID pandemic,” he added.
With championships at state level and national level being organised in near future, the players will have to get some practice before they can participate in these tournaments, Qureshi said
