OIC condemns republishing of Charlie Hebdo’s offensive cartoons of Prophet (PBUH)

Jeddah: The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) denounced the decision by French magazine Charlie Hebdo to republish cartoons satirizing Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing be upon Him).
Secretary General Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen expressed his deep concern over this decision, describing it as contrary to international human rights rules and the principle of freedom of religion.
There is a need for a united global effort to combat religious extremism and terrorism and promote peace, dialogue, and tolerance, Dr. Al-Othaimeen pointed out, stressing that time has come to set internationally binding legal tools to prevent incitement, racism, discrimination, religious hatred and promote respect for all religions.
He went on, “Acts of Islamophobia are a clear violation of freedom of religion and belief as recognized by international law, a grave offense to over a billion and a half Muslims and a downright affront to people of conscience around the world.”
Islamophobia is used as a tool to sow discord among peoples and nations, he warned, pointing out that freedom of expression is not a license to make fun of the feelings of others, in total breach of the universal principle of respect for religions and the importance of promoting dialogue, understanding and cooperation among religions, cultures, and civilizations for peace and harmony to prevail in the world.
Further, Dr. Al-Othaimeen commended President Macron’s call on French citizens to show civility and respect for each other.
