Omar’s objectionable silence on Gupkar declaration

Having said that he won’t ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi “to reverse what he did in Jammu & Kashmir” the National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah owes an explanation on Gupkar declaration from the signatories of the declaration other than the leaders of National Conference particularly Peoples Conference leader Sajad Gani Lone and CPI (M) Secretary M Y Tarigami. Unfortunately the none of the non NC signatories of Gupkar declaration have dared to contest highly objectionable remark of Omar  Abdullah and asked him to explain his stand on Gupkar declaration in unambiguous terms. Carrying a huge burden of political betrayals and backtracks of last several decades the two top National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah are not to be trusted blindly by the Non NC signatories of Gupkar declaration but explanations have to be sought from them by Non NC signatories of Gupkar declaration on each and every objectionable remark against the basic spirit of the unanimous stand on restoration of statehood and special status explained well in both the Gupkar declaration and as well as the pleas filed against both scrapping of special status and as well as J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 invoked to bifurcate the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state into two union territories-Jammu & Kashmir and Ladhak. The silence of non NC signatories of Gupkar declaration against it’s deviation by two top NC leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah would finally erode their own credibility and finally the unity of six party alliance formed for pursuing the core agenda of the restoration of special status and statehood to Jammu & Kashmir. The mainstream parties particularly the signatories of the Gupkar declaration have to remove the trust deficit by their actions and not words.

Omar does not command support over any backtrack on restoration of statehood and special status even from his top party colleagues like Syed Aga Ruhullah. If Aga Syed Ruhulla musters the courage to ask Omar Abdullah questions on restoration of statehood and special status, why should Sajad Lone, M Y Tarigami and others shy from seeking explanations from Omar Abdullah over his deviation from much hyped Gupkar declaration  explicitly or implicitly.

Holding a press conference to announce Gupkar declaration for restoration of special status to statehood to Jammu & Kashmir won’t reconnect the Kashmir’s mainstream with the people at the grass roots but the fight  of the mainstream parties against the central government’s August 5 decisions of last year is the only way for them to identify themselves with the people at the grass roots in Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah can’t take off Gupkar declaration from the agenda of the six party alliance the way he shaved off his beard immediately after release from the Srinagar detention centre in April this year unless and until the non NC signatories don’t also side with him for the purposes of pelf and power.
