Srinagar: The weather turned chilly on Sunday as the mercury settled about 10 degrees below normal during the day due to intermittent incessant rains and overcast conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley.
Meanwhile, a weather warning for Isolated Thunderstorm (TS), lightening, hail and gusty winds (30 to 40 km per hour) has been extended during the next three days in Jammu and Kashmir in the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that widespread light to moderate rain or thunders could would in the UT J&K and isolated light rain in UT Ladakh during the next 24 hours.
He said that there could be Isolated TS, Lightening, Hail and 30 km to 40 kmph gusty winds in Kashmir and Jammu till June 3. Earlier, similar warning was issued till May 31, he said, adding there is no such warning for Ladakh region.
After witnessing above normal night temperature, people woke up to a chilly and rainy Sunday morning in Srinagar. Incessant intermittent rain continued throughout the day on Sunday in the city, where most of the roads were waterlogged, affecting pedestrian and vehicular movement. People in the city could be seen wearing light jackets and sweaters to evade the chilly conditions. The maximum temperature in Srinagar dipped and settled at 16.5 degree, which is about 10 degree below normal.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, also witnessed incessant rain since early this morning, resulting in dip in the day temperature. The ski resort remained deserted since March when a nationwide lockdown was implemented to prevent spread of COVID-19.
Rain lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature, which settled at 13.2 degree, which is about 10 degree below normal.
Incessant intermittent rain also lashed other parts of the valley, including Kupwara in north Kashmir, Qazigund, gateway to the valley and Kukernag. The maximum temperature in these places also settled about 10 degree below normal.
