Srinagar/May,19 : Junaid Ahmad Sahrai the son of top separatist leader and head of Tehreek-Hurriyat Ashraf Sehrai was among the two militants killed on Tuesdau in a gunfight with government forces in Nawakadal area of old Srinagar city.
Officials said the gunfight erupted after government forces received specific inputs about the presence of militants in old Srinagar city at Kanemazar in Nawakadal area. As already reported a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force cordoned off the area but militants hiding in a house opened fire on the forces triggering a gunfight which lasted for several hours. Two militants were killed in the gunfight which last for several hours, said the officials. Though official confirmation about the identity of the slain militants is awaited from Jammu & Kashmir Police but one of the militants killed in the gunfight is believed to have been identified as as Junaid Ahmad Sahrai the son of Tehreek-e- Hurriyat Chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai. Junaid Sehrai had joined the Hizb Ul Mujahideen in 2018 .Notably, this is the first ginfight between governmrnt forces and the militants in Srinagar after a gap of almost two years.Police claims to have recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from the possession of slain militants, said a brief police statement.
Three forces personnel including two J&K policemen and one CRPF trooper were earlier injured after the joint team launched a cordon and search operation in the old city area.
