Srinagar: The COVID-19 cases continue to rise unabated with 62 more persons, including 46 from Kashmir and 16 from Jammu, testing positive on Sunday, taking the total number of infected people in the Union Territory of J&K to 1183.

With this, as many as 389 new COVID-10 cases, mostly of them from Kashmir, were tested positive for the infection this week in J&K, where the death toll due to the infection has risen to 13 even as a 29-year-old woman became the latest victim of the virus in Kashmir on Sunday.

Meanwhile, 33 COVID-19 positive patients were on Sunday discharged after being treated successfully in J&K.

An official on Sunday said that 46 more people tested positive for Coronavirus in Kashmir division while 16 new cases were reported from Jammu. “Kulgam recorded the highest number of 28 new COVID-19 cases followed by Anantnag with 15 cases,” he said, adding six people tested positive for the infection in Jammu.

He said five persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Ramban in Jammu. “Two new cases were reported from Samba in Jammu,” he said, adding Srinagar, Pulwama, Udhampur, Kathua and Poonch recorded one case each.

With 62 new cases, he said the total number of infected persons in J&K has risen to 1183. “Out of these, 989 are in Kashmir and 132 are in Jammu,” he said.

He said the total active positive cases in the UT stand at 595, including 509 from Kashmir and 86 from Jammu.

He said 33 COVID-19 patients from J&K were discharged on Sunday after being treated successfully. “As many as 575 positive patients were treated and discharged successfully so far,” he said.

Last week, 160 people were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K. As many as 178 new people, including 174 from Kashmir and four from Jammu, tested for the virus between 27 April and May 3. An alarming number of 168 people were tested positive for the infection April 20 to April 26. As many as 118 people, including 111 from Kashmir and seven from Jammu, were tested positive for COVID-19 between April 13 and April 19. Meanwhile, 138 people, mostly from Kashmir, were tested positive for COVID-19 in J&K between April 6 and April 12. Thirty-three new positive cases, including 28 from Kashmir and three from Jammu, were reported on April 4 and April 5, making it one of the highest jumps in the COVID-19 infected persons in J&K.

With the death of a woman on Sunday, Srinagar has witnessed five deaths due to COVID-19 infection, the highest in any district of J&K.

An elderly man, who died in a hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar on Saturday, tested positive for COVID-19. Another elderly man had died on Wednesday in Jammu due to COVID-19.

Earlier this week, an elderly man died on Monday due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. The death of the elderly man had come just days after his son became the youngest victim of the infection in J&K.

J&K recorded first death due to COVID-19 on March 25, when a 65-year-old man from Hyderpora died due to the infection at Chest Disease Hospital. Then, on March 29, a 50-year-old man, a resident of Tangmarg, passed away at CD hospital.

Earlier last month, a 54-year-old Bandipora resident, who was tested positive for the infection, died at SMHS hospital. Later on April 8, a 61-year-old woman from Udhampur died at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu. A 70-year-old patient died on April 17 due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. An elderly man, a resident of Baramulla, on April 18 died due to Coronavirus in Kashmir valley. A pregnant woman, who died at a hospital in Anantnag on Saturday, tested positive on April 26. An 80-year-old woman died in a hospital in Srinagar on April 28 due to the infection.
