Srinagar/ April,7: National Conference (NC) Vice President and former Chief Omar Abdullah on Tuesday asked the Central government to free Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti from detention, saying that shifting her home while continuing to keep her in detention is “cop-out”.
Taking to micro blogging social networking site twitter Omar wrote “Mehbooba Mufti must be set free. Shifting her home while continuing to keep her detained is a cop out.”The NC leader’s comments came a couple of hours after Mehboob Mufti was shifted from a make-shift jail to her residence. Reportedly, the order to shift the 60-year-old Mufti was issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department.
The order stated that she was being shifted from a subsidiary jail at Maulana Azad Road to Fairview Gupkar Road, which is her official residence. The government accorded the status of subsidary jail to her official residence with immediate effect. The PDP leader, along with several top politicians in Kashmir, was put under house arrest on August 5 last year, when the Centre decided to revoke Article 370 and bifurcate the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
Later in February this year, the Jammu and Kashmir administration invoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) against Mufti and Omar Abdullah. Abdullah was released from detention last month while Mufti continues to remain under detention.
