Rain lashes Srinagar, other parts of Kashmir; gusty winds damage rooftops

Srinagar: After witnessing pleasant weather during the last couple of days, the summer capital, Srinagar, and other parts of Kashmir valley received rain in the evening on Wednesday, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature.

Meanwhile, the night temperature improved and settled several degrees above normal due to overcast conditions across the valley, where rooftops of several houses were damaged on Wednesday evening due to high speed winds.

The authorities have issued weather advisory between Thursday and Saturday, where an active Western Disturbance (WD) is most likely affect J&K. “Under the influence of this WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and approached the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, moderate to heavy rain and snow would occur at isolated places,” a Met department spokesperson said, adding light rain and snow would occur at many places in the valley during this time.

There is possibility of thundershowers/hail story and gushing winds with a speed of 30-40 km per hour at few places of Kashmir during these three days, he added.

He said this may lead to temporary disruption of surface and air transportation, including Srinagar-Jammu national highway and Sadhna pass. “Farmers are advised to suspend Agricultural operations and drain out excess water from fields/orchards,” he added.

People in the summer capital, Srinagar woke up to a sunny Wednesday morning in Srinagar, where the mercury improved about 2 degree from Tuesday and settle at 4.1 degree. However, as the day progressed, the skies turned cloudy following by incessant rain.

Rain also lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. The mercury in the health resort improved and settled at minus 1.2 degree, against minus 2 degree recorded on Tuesday.

Skies were cloudy at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is still covered under several feet of snow. However, the upper reaches in the ski resort received rain in the evening, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature.

Rain also lashed Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag. The night temperatures in these areas settled at 2.7 degree, 1.5 degree and 3.9 degree, respectively.
