Srinagar: Only one-way traffic will continue to ply till further orders on Monday on the 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, where people had to struggle for hours due to heavy traffic jam on Sunday.

Meanwhile, massive snow clearance operation continued on the national highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, which remained closed for the past over two months due to avalanches and accumulation of snow, particularly at  Zojila pass.

The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch  in Jammu region and Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed for the past over two months due to snow.

On Monday traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, a traffic police official told UNI. However, he said, the vehicles have to cross Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir before 1200 hrs. Only one-way traffic will continue to ply till further orders, he said.

Traffic on the highway was suspended on Saturday due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain. However, traffic was resumed on Sunday and vehicles were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar.

People travelling from Jammu to Srinagar yesterday alleged that despite one-way, vehicles were also allowed from opposite direction resulting in major traffic jam at Ramban, Chanderkote, Sarmoli and Ramsu.

Due to heavy traffic jam at Ramban and Chanderkote hundreds of vehicles got stranded for hours, a traveller G N Bhat told UNI. There was also traffic jam at Sarmoli and Ramsu, he said.

Bhat said he alongwith his family reached Srinagar at 0130 hrs due to traffic jam after vehicles were allowed from opposite direction also.
