Srinagar: The hostel boarders of Central University of Kashmir Thursday complained that they were beaten by the government forces who barged inside their hostel rooms in Ganderbal district.
The students said that the government forces thrashed them and research scholars there without any reason on Wednesday night when all the hostel boarders were inside their hostel rooms.
The incident created chaos inside the hostel which put all the hostel boarders on alert. “We pleaded before the government forces about the reason for beating and thrashing the students but they didn’t listen to the pleas,” a student said wishing not to be named.
Another student said that the SOG men reached the spot at around 11pm and raided all the rooms of the hostel without showing any official order. “They turned our wardrobes and desks upside down which created fear among the students during the late night hours.
“The students objected the searching of their wardrobes and bags and urged the security forces to contact the university authorities for carrying out their searches in the premises but they got annoyed with it and started beating the students,” the students said.
The students said two hostel boarders were injured were taken to SKIMS, Soura for treatment. “Around a dozen more hostel boarders also received minor injuries during the assault,” they said.
The students said the SOG personnel told them that militants were hiding in the hostel premises. “But the fact is that there was no such incident and even if anyone had entered the hostel premises then the security forces should have also contacted the university authorities instead of beating the students for none of their fault,” the hostel boarders said.
A video had also gone viral on social media in which the students were seen objecting the search by SOG personnel. Meanwhile, on Thursday there were reports of student protest against the highhandedness of SOG personnel inside the hostel premises.
A top police official said that there were reports of suspicious movement inside the hostel premises following which the searches were conducted. A University official said that the varsity has taken up the matter with police department. “The police may conduct investigations into the incident and ascertain why students were thrashed,” he said.
