Asked about the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Farooq said that sooner or later, elections will take place in the State.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Dr Farooq called for unity among the people to defeat the ‘inimical forces’.

He added that the pressure is every side, everybody is being pressurized even newspapers are being pressurized as their advertisements are being stopped. “The unity among the people irrespective of their party affiliations is must to fight against this pressure. We can only come out from this pressure through unity,” he said.

Pertinently, Dr Farooq paid floral tributes to the martyrs of 13 July, 1931. He was accompanied by MP Hasnain Masoodi, NC General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, former finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather, Salman Sagar and others.

Dr Farooq also highlighted the sacrifices of the martyrs killed on this day in 1931.

July 13 is observed as Martyrs Day in Jammu and Kashmir to remember those killed in the firing outside the Srinagar Central Jail by forces of the Dogra Maharaja in 1931.

The state government observes the day to honour those who fought for Independence in 1947. It is a public holiday in the state.
