Srinagar: Two former chief ministers – Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti – on Friday paid tribute to senior journalist and founder of Rising Kashmir on his first death anniversary.
Mr Bukhari and his two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) were shot dead on this day last year by unidentified gunmen outside Rising Kashmir’s office in Press Enclave in the heart of summer capital, Srinagar.
Ms Mehbooba, who is the President of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Mr Bukhari wasn’t just a brilliant journalist but a true peacenik who bravely embarked on a crusade for peace only to be martyred for his beliefs. His legacy lives on in his children, she added.
“Remembering Shujaat Bukhari on his first death anniversary. Shujaat wasnt just a brilliant journalist but a true peacenik who bravely embarked on a crusade for peace only to be martyred for his beliefs. His legacy lives on in his children,” Ms Mehbooba wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
Meanwhile, taking to twitter, Mr Abdullah, who is the Vice President of National Conference (NC), wrote, “My thoughts & prayers are with my colleague Syed Basharat Bukhari & his family on this, the 1st death anniversary of Shujaat. May Allah grant Shujaat the highest place in Jannat & his loved ones strength.”
The state police on June 28, 2018 addressed a press conference, asserting that the murder was planned in Pakistan and executed by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). “Sajjad Gul of Srinagar — hiding in Pakistan — Azad Ahmad Malik, Muzaffar Ahmad, both reportedly from south Kashmir, and Naveed Jatt, a Pakistani militant, were responsible for the killing of Mr Bukhari,” Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, S P Pani told reporters during the press conference.
Jatt, who had escaped from SMHS hospital earlier in 2018, was later killed in a gunfight in November last year.
