Srinagar: Chief spokesperson of the Hurriyat Conference was on Saturday arrested by police in Srinagar, official sources said.
They said a police party raided the house of Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar and took him in custody and lodged him in police station Sher Garhi, Srinagar.
However, it was not immediately clear why he was arrested, they said.
Meanwhile, chairman of HC Syed Ali Geelani strongly condemned the arrest of Gulzar.
Terming his detention unlawful and unjustified, he strongly criticized police action and said that political space is being denied by creating a situation of uncertainty and political turbulence in the state. By pushing people to wall India will achieve nothing, they should face the political leaders and workers on political turf, he added.
Dozens of separatists, including spokespersons of both the HC Aiyaz Akbar and Advocate Shahidul Islam are already under the custody of National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Enforcement Directorate and are lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
