Srinagar /May, 6 : Just below 3% polling was recorded on Monday in twin districts of Pulwama and Shopian district that went to polls in third and final phase of polling for Ananatnag Lok Sabha seat while more than 63% polling was recorded in Leh and Kargil districts that went to polls in the fifth phase of polling of the ongoing lok sabha elections in the county
While Leh and Kargil recorded 63.70 percent turnout, the turnout was dismal in Pulwama and Shopian. Enthusiastic voters started pouring out to throng the polling stations in Leh and Kargil districts since early morning.
In contrast, most of the polling stations wore a deserted look in Shopian and Pulwama districts where polling was being held in the third and final phase of Anantnag Lok Sabha seat. Just 2.81%polling was recorded in both the districts
Polling started at 7 a.m. in both the Lok Sabha seats, but ended at 4 p.m. in Anantnag constituency and 6 p.m. in Ladakh constituency.
In Ladakh, the contest was four-cornered between Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rigzin Spalbar of the Congress and two independents, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Hussain.
There are 18 candidates in fray in Anantnag, but the main contest is between Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Congress and Justice (retired) Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference. The votes will be counted on May 23.
A grenade blast took place at a polling station in Pulwama while a petrol bomb was hurled at another polling station in Shopian. No loss of life was reported in both the incidents.
Reports of clashes between protesters and the security forces were received from various areas of both Pulwama and Shopian.
