Srinagar: One-way traffic was resumed on Saturday on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country after remaining suspended for several hours due to landslides and shooting stone in Ramban area.
Fresh traffic will be resumed today only after all Kashmir bound vehicles, stranded at different places since last night, will be cleared, official sources told UNI.
As per scheduled traffic was to ply from Kashmir to Jammu today, they said.
They said the road was closed due to landslides and shooting stones at Digdol and other areas in Ramban in the wee hours on Saturday. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) immediately put into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the road.
The road has been partially reopened and Kashmir bound vehicles which were stranded at different places were allowed to move towards their respective destinations.
They said scheduled traffic from Kashmir will be allowed only after stranded vehicles will be cleared.
However, no fresh vehicle will be allowed from Jammu today, they added.
Meanwhile, traffic department official said Jammu bound Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will have to cross Levdora Qazigund between 0700 hrs to 1000 hrs while Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) from 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs. No vehicle will be allowed after the deadline.
They warned against night travelling on the highway and said those violating the restrictions will be fined.
Only one-way traffic is plying on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for the past about two years due to work road widening. However, this winter traffic on the highway was frequently disrupted resulted in shortage of essentials, particularly fresh vegetables, meat and chicken. Prices of essentials also witnessed sharp increase.
