Local among two JeM affiliates killed in Shopian gunfight

Srinagar: Two militants were killed an encounter that raged in the wee hours between government forces and them in Meemandar village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The slain militants as per police were affiliated with Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), stating that one among them was a foreigner while another a local identified as Suhail Nazir Mir son of Nazir Ahmad Mir resident of Saidapora Payeen, Shopian.
Police said on credible inputs about the presence of militants in the village a Cordon and Search Operation was launched jointly by police and other security forces. However, the hiding militants fired upon the search party that was retaliated and leading to an encounter in the village, which ended with the killing of two militants.
As per the police records, they were involved in conspiring and executing several attacks and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities, police said, adding several crime cases were registered against them for their terrorist activities.
Pertinent to mention that due to the efforts of Police and security forces, it was a clean operation and no collateral damage happened during the encounter.
Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter and has been taken into case records to probe their complicity in other crimes. “Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, police requested people not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.
Moreover, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of a local Jaish militant. Amid pro-freedom sloganeering, the Jaish militant was laid to rest at his native village after multiple funeral prayers, eyewitnesses said.
