Srinagar: Protests and strike continued for the sixth successive day in the border town of Kargil and adjoining areas,against the Governor administration’s decision to set up permanent headquarters of the newly-created Ladakh division in Leh.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads due to a strike called against the move of the Governor administration. Work in government offices and banks were also affected due to the strike.
The move to create a separate administrative division for Ladakh with its permanent headquarters at Leh has created problems for the Governor, as protests against the decision has rocked Kargil since the order was passed on February 8.
The people of Kargil are protesting to press for their demand for rotational basis headquarters in Kargil and Leh for the Ladakh division.
On Thursday, thousands of protestors blocked the road leading to Kargil and stopped newly appointed Divisional Commissioner Swagat Viswas of Ladakh region from entering the border town.
The state government on February 8 approved creation of a separate Administrative/ Revenue Division for Ladakh. “The division will comprise of Leh and Kargil districts with its headquarters at Leh,” said an official handout.
