National Conference leaders have once again started beating drums on alleged discrimination with the Srinagar city ahead of forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections the way they did so during 2008 assembly elections. Attempt to reignite emotions of rural-urban divide in Kashmir won’t fetch National Conference all the eight assembly seats of Srinagar city again and again as people in Kashmir are politically conscious enough to judge poll contestants on their actions but not words. National Conference accusing other parties of ignoring Srinagar city can’t evade queries on the public criticism over its role in aftermath of the filling of historical Nala-i-Mar canal by erstwhile G M Sadiq government. Even naives not to talk of National Conference leaders can’t deny the fact that Nalla-i- March was connecting the Brari Nambal lagoon to the Khushal Sar lake and used to provide navigability between the Dal and Aanchar lakes and successive National Conference regimes failed to keep their promises on restoration of the pristine glory of Srinagar city.During campaigning for 2008 assembly elections National Conference promised to connect the entire Srinagar city by flowers but it hardly started the work on Jahangir Chowk-Natipora fly over in the year 2014 and the work on the fly started with Bikram Chowk fly over in Jammu is yet to be completed. Omar Abdullah can’t claim the credit for the Jahangir Chowk- Natipora fly over as the fact remains that the dream project was cleared for construction by erstwhile Gh Nabi Azad led Congress-PDP coalition government and Omar Abdullah after taking the charge as Chief Minister in 2009 could not start the work in the first three years of NC-Congress coalition rule.
Creating a fresh debate over allegations of discrimination with Srinagar city can’t deflect the attention of Srinagarites from the neglect of the Srinagar city over the promises on restoration of city’s pristine glory .
Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister of NC-Congress coalition government owes explanations to the people for the unprecedented delay caused in the start of the construction on Jahangir Chowk-Natipora fly over during his six year coalition rule in the state and PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti too owes explanations for the failures of her government in missing almost half a dozen deadlines set for the completion of this fly over. Fact also remains that during six years of NC-Congress coalition rule no mega developmental project was started for Srinagar’s facelift and instead of giving an account of their work in their six year coalition rule with the Congress party from 2009 to November 2014 the National Conference leaders are trying to make new promises and evade queries on the contribution of NC led regimes of yesteryears in the development of Srinagar city.
