Srinagar: One militant was on Sunday afternoon killed in a shootout at Handwara bypass when a militant fired a grenade on a naka party of government forces triggering an encounter. SSP Handwara Ashish Kumar Mishra told KNS news agency a militant hurled a grenade on a naka party of Jammu and Kashmir police which retaliated with a gunfire and the militant was killed in the shootout.
Police in a statement said that a group of militants while moving through Handwara was intercepted by a naka party near Chotipora in the jurisdiction of Police station Handwara triggering an encounter during which one militant was killed. The area has been cordoned off and searches are going on in the area.
Meanwhile police said on the basis of the incriminating materials recovered from the killed militant, the killed militant has been identified as Ishtiyaaq from Pakistan who was affiliated with proscribed militant outfit JeM.
He was involved in a series of militant attacks on security establishments and many other cases.
