Srinagar: Unknown gunmen shot dead an Islamic State-Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) based militant in Naseem Bagh area of Hazratbal on Saturday.
Polices sources said that ISJK militant identified as Asif Nazir Dar s/o Nazir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Panzgam Awantipora of Pulwama district was killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday afternoo “One pistol, two magazines and a fake identity card were recovered from the possession of the slain youth,” said an official.
Sources informed that Asif was a member of Islamic State JK outfit and was active since 7 January 2017. Earlier he was associated with Hizbul Mujahideen and later he became the top militant of ISJK.
Soon after his killing a police team reached at the spot immediately and recovered the body for medico-legal formalities. A case under relevant sections of law was registered and further investigation was taken up to ascertain the incident.
A top police official said that the body was handed over to the family of slain militant. Meanwhile, massive protests broke out in Awantipora after the militant’s body was marched towards his native village in Panzgam Awantipora.
Protesters were shouting pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans. The protests march was going from SP office Awantipora to nearby village Panzgam.
Meanwhile Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) have contested the reports that the youth shot dead at Naseem Bagh Hazratbal was a student of the varsity.
Vice chancellor (VC) IUST Prof. Mushtaq Siddiqui said the varsity got the reports cross checked from the Police authorities as well. I talked to SSP Srinagar who said the identity card recovered from the body seems to be fake. We also checked from the student inventory of the varsity and we didn’t find any student by this name,” VC IUST said.
He said the news reports on social media and other portals which claim that deceased was a student of IUST are not correct.
“The University doesn’t have any student of this name. There is no match of the information in the student list of IUST as is shown on the identity card of the deceased,” Prof Siddique said.
