Srinagar, Aug 30: A complete shutdown called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik on the eve of hearing of a petition against Article 35-A in the Supreme Court has crippled normal life across Kashmir.

According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), all shops, business establishments and educational institutions are closed and traffic is off the roads.

Law enforcing authorities have imposed curfew like restrictions in seven police station areas of Srinagar city and other areas of Kashmir valley.

Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have been house detained in an attempt to prevent protests by the pro-freedom leaders.

The authorities have also suspended train services in Kashmir Valley.

It may be recalled here that Joint Resistance Leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have called for a two-day shutdown on the eve of hearing against petitions filed for abrogation of Article 35-A in the Supreme Court.

Kashmir’s top trading bodies, employee associations and Kashmir High Court Bar Association have supported the call for two-day shutdown by Joint Resistance Leadership.

National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Awami National Conference and several Civil Society groups have filed applications of intervention to defend Article 35-A in the Supreme Court scheduled to come up for hearing tomorrow.
