Srinagar: A youth was killed and two others were injured when a shell exploded at Tosamaidan in central Kashmir district of Budgam on Sunday, official sources said.
Meanwhile, district authorities have issued fresh advisory, directing people not to fiddle with any shell or suspected object in Tosamaidan, which was used as a firing range by the Army before it was handed over to state government in 2014.
Sources said that a shell exploded at Tosamaidan on Sunday afternoon, resulting in injuries to three youth.
The injured were immediately taken to Primary Health Centre from where they were referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar. “One of the injured, identified as Wajid Bashir Ahanger, later succumbed in the hospital,” they said.
They said police have registered a case and initiated investigation into the incident.
After Tosamaidan was handed over to the state government, a clean up driver was launched by the Army during which latest machines were used to detect and defuse unexploded shells in the area.
However, after the incident, the district authorities have said that a fresh sanitization drive will be launched to trace and defuse any other unexploded shell.
