Threat to journalists: Rein in opportunistic loose cannons, NC tells BJP

Srinagar: National Conference on Saturday described threats to media by a BJP legislator as most disgusting and disturbing, saying the journalists were working in most difficult situations in Jammu and Kashmir and any act of browbeating or regulating freedom of speech or to suppress the press is condemnable.
“The BJP should rein in opportunistic loose cannons, who are demonstrating most uncivil behavior after losing the power”, NC Provincial Spokesperson Madan Mantoo said while describing the threats to media by Choudhry Lal Singh as unfortunate and outrageous.
Mantoo said that a threat to journalists is not only an attack on the freedom of expression but also against the people’s right to be informed.
“It is an attack on democracy”, the Spokesperson said, adding that silence of the BJP and failure in taking action against the MLA will be construed as its endorsement to such kind of intimidation to the media fraternity.
